Jinan University Media Center – On the morning of December 5, Chen Hongjian, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Primary Industries of Malaysia, led a delegation to Jinan University for a cooperation meeting with President Xing Feng, who is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The two sides held in-depth discussions on the development of the China-Malaysia Belt and Road Joint Laboratory, scientific innovation and platform development, talent cultivation, and industrial application, laying a foundation for further advancing bilateral technological collaboration.
The meeting was held at the Administration Building on Jinan University’s Shipai Campus. Attendees included representatives from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and other institutions, as well as Zhang Hong, Vice President of Jinan University, along with heads of relevant offices including the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation, the Office of Science and Technology, and the International School. Discussions centered on the progress and research cooperation mechanisms of the China-Malaysia Joint Laboratory for Oils and Fats Processing and Safety under the Belt and Road Initiative.

President Xing Feng introduced Jinan University’s history and distinctive international character as an institution dedicated to serving overseas Chinese communities. He highlighted the university’s disciplinary strengths and research foundations in emerging engineering fields such as food science, materials science, and biomedicine. He expressed hope that both sides would deepen research collaboration and academic exchanges through the joint laboratory platform, further advancing cooperation in oils and fats science and technology, and contributing to the Belt and Road Initiative.
Deputy Minister Chen Hongjian outlined the industrial base and development plans for Malaysia’s primary products such as palm oil. He noted that China is a key partner for Malaysia and emphasized the strong alignment between Malaysia’s development goals and Jinan University’s expertise in technology R&D and talent training. He proposed enhanced tripartite collaboration among universities, research institutions, and enterprises to promote the translation of research outcomes and achieve mutual benefits.
During the meeting, the two sides reached consensus on jointly advancing research projects, talent exchange programs, and industry-academia cooperation, and exchanged commemorative gifts.

Moving forward, Jinan University will continue to strengthen cooperation with Malaysian government bodies, universities, and industries, focusing on areas such as palm oil deep processing, development of bioactive substances, and food safety, to foster innovative outcomes and provide scientific and talent support for building a high-level China-Malaysia strategic community with a shared future.
