Recently, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announced its list of newly elevated Fellows for the year 2026. Professor Guo Tuan from the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering (College of Science and Engineering) at Jinan University has been elected to this prestigious rank. He is among approximately 300 scholars selected worldwide, including 44 from universities in Chinese mainland.
IEEE is one of the world’s largest and most influential professional technical organizations, with a presence in over 160 countries and a membership exceeding 400,000. The grade of IEEE Fellow is the highest distinction conferred by the organization and is reserved for those who have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments in engineering, technology, or related fields. The selection process involves rigorous peer review, with fewer than 0.1% of all IEEE members elevated to Fellow each year.
IEEE recognized Professor Guo “for contributions to optical fiber sensing technologies for renewable energy and healthcare industries.” This honor not only acknowledges his individual scholarly achievements but also underscores the research strength and impact of Jinan University in optoelectronic science and cross-disciplinary applications.
Professor Guo Tuan serves as Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Jinan University, a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor in the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering. He is also a Fellow of Optica (formerly OSA), a national-level leading talent, and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. His long-term research focuses on optical fiber sensing technology and its innovative applications in renewable energy, biomedicine, marine monitoring, and power systems. He has led numerous key national and provincial research projects and has published over 180 SCI-indexed papers in top-tier international journals including Nature Communications, Light: Science & Applications, and Energy & Environmental Science. His work has been cited more than 8,200 times, with an H-index of 52.
In addition, Professor Guo received the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Technical Award in 2018 and the IEEE IMS Best Application Award in 2022. He currently serves as Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology and as an Editorial Board Member for IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, among other academic roles.
