Early Challenges and Motivation
On December 6, 2023, the Zeng Xianzi Science Museum's international conference hall buzzed with excitement as Tian addressed her peers during the “5A Excellence Leading Program” public evaluation and defense meeting. Reflecting on her journey, Tian recalled the intense pressure she faced upon entering Jinan University, particularly in a discipline demanding strong mathematical and physical skills.

Despite her initial academic struggles, Tian embraced her role as class monitor of the 2021 Optoelectronics Class, aiming to inspire her classmates. She embarked on a mission to enhance her understanding of challenging subjects by taking additional online courses and utilizing mind maps for organization and clarity in her studies. This method allowed her to transform her learning experience, helping her consistently rank in the top six of her class from her sophomore year onward.
Extracurricular Achievements
Tian’s tenacity extended beyond her academic performance. She participated in the “Internet Plus” National Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for three consecutive years, presenting innovative projects such as “Divine 'Exciting' Ingenuity – The Innovation Road of Efficient Optical Computing Chips,” ultimately winning a provincial silver medal. Her dedication to not only her progress but also to uplifting her classmates led to the overall improvement of her class's GPA by 0.5 points.

As her commitment to learning deepened, so did her involvement in research. Tian joined the Optical Waveguide Integration Technology and Device Research Laboratory and became fascinated with the field of terahertz technology. This hands-on experience allowed her to apply theoretical knowledge while gaining invaluable insights into scientific research.
Overcoming Research Challenges
Tian’s journey in research has not been without obstacles. As a junior researcher, she faced difficulties due to her limited theoretical knowledge, often having to educate herself to interpret experimental results. Despite a heavy coursework load, she committed herself to laboratory work, often staying late to refine her experimental techniques.

Her perseverance paid off after numerous trials; she produced significant results during a late-night experiment, showcasing her relentless spirit. “If the progress goes smoothly, I often forget to eat because I am so immersed in the experiment,” she reflected.
So far, her research endeavors have culminated in three SCI papers and one invention patent. These accomplishments highlight Tian’s ability to blend hard work with intellectual curiosity, leading to her notable success.
Future Aspirations
With an admission letter from Nankai University for a master's program in Optical Engineering, Tian embraces her next chapter with enthusiasm. She credits her success to intentional choices made from her freshman year onward, emphasizing the importance of aligning her studies with her passion for research.
