In the 4th National College Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition, Jinan University’s teaching team achieved remarkable success, securing 1 first prize, 3 second prizes, and 1 third prize. To spotlight these accomplishments, the Integrated Media Center of Jinan University has launched a series titled Jinan Teaching Highlights, showcasing innovative teaching methods and practices. This report features Associate Professor Hou Yawen from the School of Economics, who is leading efforts to integrate AI into teaching to better prepare students for future challenges.

A Commitment to Curriculum Innovation
Under Hou Yawen’s leadership, the team won the first prize in the New Humanities Deputy High School Group for their course Multivariate Statistical Analysis. This achievement reflects the team’s dedication to addressing student learning difficulties through innovative approaches. Hou describes curriculum innovation as akin to upgrading and defeating monsters, where monsters represent the challenges students face in their studies.
The course, which has been evolving since 2002, faced initial challenges due to the lack of suitable textbooks and expensive analysis software. In response, the team developed independent intellectual property textbooks and software, making significant strides in curriculum construction.

Interdisciplinary Approach and Virtual Learning
The Multivariate Statistical Analysis course is characterized by its deep integration of knowledge from management, statistics, and computer science. This interdisciplinary approach enhances the learning experience but also presents challenges for students. To address this, the team has created a virtual simulation experiment teaching platform to provide practical application scenarios that engage students and facilitate their understanding of complex concepts.
Students can access over 100 application scenarios through the platform, which allows them to practice statistical analysis in a hands-on manner. This innovative teaching mode has been recognized as a provincial-level project and has garnered national attention for its effectiveness in education technology.

In response to the evolving digital landscape, the team has established four major platforms to enhance student learning:
1. Digital Teaching Materials and Aids Platform

These platforms help students progress from foundational knowledge to advanced applications, making statistical programming more accessible and less intimidating. By utilizing AI tools, students can focus on core concepts rather than getting bogged down in coding details.

Ideological and Political Education Integration
Hou emphasizes the importance of integrating ideological and political education into technology courses. By aligning course content with social realities and national strategies, students are encouraged to engage with broader societal issues. Student Achievements and Community Engagement
The innovative teaching methods have led to significant student achievements, with students winning over 30 awards in various competitions. Notably, students have conducted impactful research, such as investigating the mental health of elderly drifters in Guangzhou, demonstrating the practical application of their learning.

The success of the teaching team is attributed to a collaborative environment that encourages equal communication and shared progress. Senior members mentor newer faculty, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. This collaborative spirit was crucial during the preparation for the national competition, where the team received substantial support from Jinan University’s leadership and experts.
