On December 10, 2024, Jinan University achieved a significant milestone by winning the first prize at the Double Hundred Action Rural Industry Development University Alliance's Ocean Ranch Industry Science and Technology Achievement Promotion Conference held at Guangdong Ocean University. The award recognizes the outstanding case presented by Professor Cui Miao and his team from the Ecology Department of the School of Life Science and Technology, titled Application and Demonstration of Integrated Technology for Breeding of Suitable Varieties, Ecological Breeding, and Disease Prevention and Control in Marine Ranch.

 Overview of the Award-Winning Case

The project focuses on enhancing marine fish germplasm resources, specifically targeting species such as yellowfin spiny seabream, two long spiny seabream, and light colored yellow croaker. Key achievements from the research include:

- Genetic Information Analysis: Conducting detailed studies on parent conservation and salinity domestication.

- Breeding and Hatching: Improving the hatching rate of fish fry from 85% to 90% and the survival rate from 80% to 90%.

- Yield Improvement: Increasing fish yield per mu by approximately 15% year-on-year.

The project’s methodologies have been successfully demonstrated and promoted across nearly 100 breeding enterprises, cooperatives, and family farms in Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan, benefiting around 3,450 breeding households by boosting their incomes.

 Environmental and Social Impact

In addition to economic benefits, the project has made significant contributions to marine conservation. The team has conducted multiple artificial breeding and release operations, resulting in the release of nearly 100 million fish fries into the waters of Guangdong, Guangxi, and the northern South China Sea. This initiative has not only aided in the recovery of marine fishery resources but has also played a vital role in maintaining marine biodiversity, yielding substantial social, economic, and ecological benefits.

 Recognition and Achievements

Professor Cui Miao's team has also received various accolades, including:

- Guangdong Province Agricultural Technology Promotion Award

- Guangdong Province Agricultural Main Promotion Technology Award

Additionally, the team has published multiple academic papers and conducted over 30 training sessions on marine fish breeding and ecological aquaculture, training nearly 3,000 individuals. Their outreach efforts include participation in the Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent Project, which focuses on social practice and community engagement.
