On October 31, 2024, Yu Guochun, Vice Chairman of the All-China Federation of Overseas Chinese, Chief Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations, and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jinan University, led a delegation of 22 members to visit Jinan University. The visit included a symposium attended by key university officials, including Lin Rupeng, Secretary of the Party Committee; Hong An, Vice President; Liang Yan, Minister of the United Front Work Department; and Wu Chuanbin, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Federation of Jinan University.
Key Discussions and Highlights:
- Strengthening Cooperation: The symposium focused on fostering deeper cooperation between the overseas Chinese communities in Guangdong and Hong Kong and enhancing the development of new quality productivity in the Greater Bay Area. Hong An emphasized the historical ties between the Hong Kong Overseas Chinese Federation and Jinan University, noting that many members of the Hong Kong overseas Chinese community are distinguished alumni of the university. He expressed hopes for continued collaboration to leverage resources and contribute to regional development.
- Yu Guochun's Remarks: Yu highlighted the significance of the year 2024, marking multiple anniversaries: the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, and the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Overseas Chinese Federation. He called for Jinan University to enhance its role as an overseas Chinese institution, particularly in youth development, and to facilitate high-level cooperation in the Greater Bay Area.
- Huang Chuji's Contributions: Huang, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and president of the Hong Kong Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations, acknowledged Jinan University's contributions to nurturing talents who are committed to their country and Hong Kong. He emphasized the need for the federation to promote integrated development in the Greater Bay Area and enhance the role of overseas Chinese youth in fostering cooperation.
- Wu Chuanbin's Overview: Wu provided insights into the history and achievements of the Overseas Chinese Federation of Jinan University, established in 1981 as the first of its kind in Guangdong Province. He noted the federation's commitment to uniting overseas Chinese and its contributions to the university's teaching and research efforts.
- Liu Yujie's Presentation: Liu, Director of the External Liaison Office, shared relevant data on Jinan University's Hong Kong alumni, highlighting that the university has trained nearly 80,000 alumni from Hong Kong, many of whom hold influential positions in various sectors, including politics and business. Alumni organizations actively engage in community service and maintain strong connections through diverse activities.
Cultural Engagement:
Prior to the symposium, the delegation visited the History Museum of Jinan University, enhancing their understanding of the university's rich heritage and its role in the overseas Chinese community.
