The premiere of Zhenduo, Jinan University's first original cultural masterpiece, captivated audiences from November 3 to 5 at the Shipai Campus auditorium. With over 5,000 attendees, including university leaders, alumni, and representatives from the literary and artistic communities, the event underscored the university’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage and fostering patriotism.

A Celebration of History and Patriotism

The play, which is part of Jinan University’s initiative to build moral character and cultivate talent, was produced collaboratively by the university’s Propaganda Department and the School of Arts, with contributions from the Pearl River Film Academy. Over 200 students and faculty members participated, bringing to life significant moments from the university’s history, including the poignant Last Lesson and the efforts to save national treasure documents.

Before the performance, an interactive exhibit featuring the Last Lesson drew attendees to engage with historical props and costumes, enhancing their understanding of the cultural themes explored in Zhenduo.

Emotional Performances

As the curtain rose, the audience was transported back to the 1940s, witnessing the dedication of educators like Zheng Zhenduo. The 90-minute performance evoked a deep emotional response, with audience members sharing in the joys and sorrows depicted on stage. The finale was met with enthusiastic applause, with attendees lighting their phones to create a starlit tribute to the performers.

The creation of Zhenduo aligns with General Secretary Xi Jinping’s vision to promote traditional Chinese culture globally. Through this performance, students and faculty gained a deeper appreciation for Jinan University’s rich heritage and the values embodied by its founders.

A Unique Educational Experience

The play serves as a living educational tool, blending artistic expression with patriotic education. It was particularly impactful for the 2024 freshmen, who attended a special performance designed to instill the Jinan spirit and foster a sense of responsibility towards their nation. Freshman Gao Fei remarked on how the performance transcended mere entertainment, providing a powerful lesson in patriotism and cultural identity.

Expanding Cultural Engagement

Following its successful premiere, Zhenduo aims to create a lasting cultural impact through various initiatives, including cultural gift boxes, online games, and animated works. These efforts will help disseminate the stories of Jinan’s history to younger generations, ensuring that the legacy of figures like Zheng Zhenduo continues to inspire.
