In an effort to enhance and promote various assistance initiatives in Guangzhou, the Jinan University team focused on the New Century National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent Project visited Pingtang County, Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province from August 27 to 30, 2024. This engagement was part of the university's Three Go to the Countryside (Bringing Culture/Science and Technology/Hygienic Health to the Countryside) social practice activity, involving student volunteers dedicated to culture, science, technology, and health. The team was led by Dean Lu Wengang of the Jinan University Bay Area International Smart Emergency and Security Development Research Institute.

The team conducted a series of investigative activities, including symposiums and visits to local government departments, enterprises, and discussions with residents to gain comprehensive insights into the cooperation work. On the morning of August 28, the Jinan University Research Symposium on East-West Cooperation Work in Pingtang County took place in the third conference room of the Pingtang County Government. The symposium was presided over by Li Weiqian, a member of the Standing Committee of Pingtang County Party Committee and Deputy County Mayor.
Dean Lu Wengang praised the collaborative efforts between Baiyun District in Guangzhou and Pingtang County, highlighting eight unique characteristics and experiences from their partnership. Deputy County Mayor Li Weiqian noted that the two regions had effectively implemented the Party Central Committee’s directives, focusing on mutual needs and advancing cooperation across various sectors, including industrial development and talent exchange.
Following the meeting, the Jinan University team conducted in-depth research and provided guidance on various work topics to relevant departments and organizations.
Pingtang County Overview
Pingtang County, located in the southern region of Guizhou Province, is known as the City of China’s Eye of Heaven due to its astronomical research focus. Covering an area of 2,806 square kilometers, it has a diverse population of approximately 332,500, with 59.6% being ethnic minorities. The county hosts the world-renowned 500m Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), which has positioned it as a global hub for astronomical research. Since 2016, with ongoing support from Baiyun District in Guangzhou, Pingtang County has implemented 107 projects funded by 330 million yuan, significantly contributing to poverty alleviation and rural revitalization.

Ongoing Initiatives
As of 2024, the collaboration between Baiyun District and Pingtang County has intensified, focusing on enhancing cooperation and exploring new developmental opportunities. Key initiatives include:
1. Project Coordination: Establishing a structured approach to project construction, with a focus on effective fund management and community economic development, including a recent issuance of 40 million yuan in cooperation funds.
2. Industry Development: Attracting investment by introducing new enterprises to Pingtang, creating job opportunities, and setting up assistance workshops that employ local labor.
3. Market Collaboration: Developing purchasing and sales relationships to expand market access for local products, which has led to substantial income generation through poverty alleviation initiatives.
4. Labor Service Integration: Facilitating employment exchanges and training for rural laborers, significantly enhancing job opportunities in the region.
5. Talent Exchange: Establishing a talent exchange network, enhancing educational and medical resources through targeted training and exchanges of professionals between the regions.
Moving Forward
The collaboration between Baiyun District and Pingtang County is aimed at jointly propelling rural revitalization and achieving high-quality development. Together, they aspire to build a future characterized by unity and strength, actively participating in the narrative of poverty alleviation and regional advancement.
This ongoing partnership reflects a commitment to social responsibility and development, making significant strides toward improving the quality of life for residents in Pingtang County while fostering robust, sustainable growth in the region.
