To foster the comprehensive development of the Department of Computer Science, clarify future goals, and enhance the research focus, the School of Information Science and Technology convened a faculty conference on September 12, 2024. The meeting took place in Room 338 of the Nanhai Building and was attended by Dean Li Zhetao, Party Secretary Luo Guowei, Deputy Party Secretary Zhang Yanli, Department Director Long Jinyi, General Branch Secretary Peng Pan, and the faculty members of the Department of Computer Science.

Enhancing Research Capabilities
Dean Li Zhetao emphasized the importance of sustainable development and innovation within the department. He urged the need to build a high-quality talent team, with a specific focus on attracting and nurturing young scholars to invigorate the department. Highlighting the strategic advantages of the Greater Bay Area, he proposed leveraging local resources to significantly improve research capabilities. Dean Li encouraged faculty members to actively pursue high-level project applications and respond to emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to foster the intrinsic growth of the discipline. He expressed optimism that, through collective effort, the Department of Computer Science could achieve remarkable advancements.
Promoting Professional Ethics
Party Secretary Luo Guowei led a thorough discussion on teacher ethics and conduct, which are essential for professional development and educational integrity. He reiterated the college's commitment to a people-oriented, quality-first educational philosophy, aiming to bolster teacher ethics through ongoing education and support. Luo outlined successful initiatives in enhancing teacher conduct and performance and emphasized the establishment of benchmarks via the guidance of exemplary teachers. He underscored the need for multi-level efforts to simultaneously advance teachers' ethical standards and professional skills, ultimately contributing to the cultivation of high-quality talent.
Strengthening National Security
Deputy Party Secretary Zhang Yanli delivered an important lecture on national security awareness, emphasizing the integral role of confidentiality in research. As part of the school’s national security publicity month, Zhang detailed the scope of state secrets and emphasized adherence to confidentiality regulations to mitigate risks of data breaches. She underscored that fostering a culture of confidentiality is a shared responsibility among all faculty members, urging them to be vigilant and proactive in ensuring national information security.
Reflecting on Achievements and Future Goals
Long Jinyi, Director of the Department of Computer Science, expressed gratitude for the faculty's collective efforts over the past semester. He acknowledged key accomplishments in discipline construction, talent acquisition, and teaching innovation as foundational for future growth. Long emphasized the department's commitment to aligning its research directions with national development strategies and enhancing traditional research fields through artificial intelligence innovations. He introduced three new faculty members—Xu Rui, Zhang Zhe, and Weng Juanjuan—who expressed their enthusiasm and dedication to contributing to the department.
Party Building Initiatives
General Branch Secretary Peng Pan summarized the party building work conducted throughout the previous semester. Under the guidance of the school’s party committee, he reported on the successful implementation of Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Peng highlighted the focus on strengthening party organization, enhancing discipline education, and promoting clean governance practices. He recognized progress while candidly addressing areas needing improvement, outlining strategies to bolster organizational cohesion and optimize the party's functional integration.
The faculty conference served as both a summary of past endeavors and a strategic planning session for future initiatives. Encouraged by the discussions, faculty members engaged actively, sharing insights and suggestions for departmental growth. The collective determination to enhance collaboration, elevate teaching quality, and advance research capabilities marks a promising outlook for the Department of Computer Science as it strives toward a brighter future.
