A research team led by Professors Ma Wenjun and Liu Tao from the School of Medicine at Jinan University has published a significant paper in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. The study, titled Association of Residential Greenness Exposure with Depression Intensity in Adults Aged 50 Years and Older: Findings from the Cohort Study on Global Aging and Adult Health (SAGE) in China, explores the impact of residential green spaces on depression among older adults.
As life expectancy increases and the aging population grows, depression has emerged as a critical public health issue for the elderly in China. This study, which uses data from the Global Aging and Adult Health Study (WHO SAGE) in China, investigates the relationship between exposure to residential green space and the incidence of depression in individuals aged 50 and older.
The paper features co-first authors Chen Zhiqing, a master's student from Jinan University, and Professor Wu Fan from the School of Medicine at Fudan University. Professors Ma Wenjun and Liu Tao serve as co-corresponding authors. The research received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the High-End Foreign Expert Introduction Program, and the Guangdong Provincial Basic and Applied Basic Research Fund Natural Science Foundation.
