Forty years ago, a group of determined students from Jinan University embarked on a remarkable journey, pedaling their bicycles northwards in a bid to establish what is now recognized as Teachers' Day in China. In just 36 days, they covered an impressive 3,000 kilometers and carried with them 10,000 proposals advocating for the recognition and respect of teachers.
Their initiative garnered widespread attention, ultimately leading the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress to formally designate September 10 as Teachers' Day, a significant acknowledgment of the vital role that teachers play in society.
A Call to Action: The Speech that Sparked Change
The foundation for this movement was laid in December 1983 when Zhu Chuan, a student studying International Finance, delivered a passionate keynote speech at Jinan University's Love China speech competition. In his address titled A Road to National Revitalization - Discussing 'Respect for Teachers' Day', Zhu emphasized the critical importance of respecting teachers to revitalize the nation. His words resonated deeply with his audience, signaling a collective yearning for change.

Zhu's speech received overwhelming support, prompting him to partner with fellow students, including Ren Jingsheng and Liu Haishan, to form the Jinan University Respect for Teachers and Education Promotion Association. This new group aimed to champion the cause of valuing educators and advocate for the establishment of a dedicated day to honor them.

Mobilizing the Movement: Events and Engagements
On May 20, 1984, the association organized a significant event that brought together over 50 teachers from across the region, furthering their campaign for a Respect for Teachers Day. They collaborated with student organizations from various universities, laying the groundwork for a broader movement within the educational community.
Their efforts soon culminated in the Guangzhou Respect for Teachers Day Promotion Association, which organized a range of activities highlighting the importance of educators, including volunteer services and direct engagements with local teachers.
The Journey North: A Determined Advocacy
Inspired by initial successes, the students decided to take their message directly to the national stage. In June 1984, a group of five students, including Zhu Chuan, set off on a bicycle journey toward Beijing, determined to promote their call for a Respect for Teachers Day. Over the course of their journey, they overcame numerous hardships, including illness and mechanical issues with their bikes, driven by their commitment to the cause.

A Landmark Achievement: Establishing Teachers' Day
On July 18, 1984, upon reaching Beijing, the Jinan students met with influential education leaders, including the president of Yan'an Conservatory, advocating for their proposal. Their efforts caught the attention of key stakeholders, and by the end of the year, Guangming Daily published their initiative.

Finally, on January 11, 1985, the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress officially established September 10 as Teachers' Day, recognizing the need to honor and respect educators across China.
A Legacy of Respect and Inspiration
The legacy of these pioneering students continues to reverberate through Jinan University and beyond. Their relentless pursuit of education advocacy has paved the way for generations of students who carry forward the spirit of respecting teachers and valuing education.
The establishment of the Jinan University Cycling Association in 1987, inspired by their journey, remains a testament to the enduring influence of their efforts. This organization continues to thrive, organizing cycling events that engage and inspire students today.
(The Bicycle Association has organized cycling activities multiple times, which are widely loved by students at Jinan University.)
As Teachers' Day approaches its 40th anniversary, the memory of those brave Jinan students reminds us of the power of youthful idealism and the lasting impact of commitment to education. Their story serves as an inspiration for new generations, embodying the values of respect, resilience, and dedication to the way
