The research team led by Professor Meng Hui from the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering at Jinan University has made significant strides in the development of efficient electrocatalysts for electrolyzed water and zinc alcohol air batteries. Their groundbreaking research, titled Orbital Occupancy Modulation to Optimize Intermediate Absorption for Efficient Electrocatalysts in Water Electrolysis and Zinc Ethanol Air Battery, has been published in the prestigious journal Advanced Materials.

The team employed innovative methods such as adjusting the electron filling of the dz2+dx2-y2 orbitals in the orthogonal/cubic mixed-phase cobalt diselenide catalyst through atomic substitution, structural symmetry changes, and in situ electrochemical reconstruction to enhance the adsorption and desorption of reactive intermediates. These optimizations were instrumental in achieving efficient electrolysis of water and improving the performance of zinc ethanol air batteries.
The paper, co-authored by Professor Meng Hui, Academician Sun Shuhui of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Professor Wang Nan, with Master's student Ye Yanting as the co-first author, demonstrates the collaborative effort and expertise of the team at Jinan University in advancing the field of electrocatalysis.
