In a groundbreaking collaboration, the team led by Professor Guan Baiou from the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering at Jinan University, in partnership with Professor Zhang Hong from the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, has unveiled their latest research findings in the prestigious journal Advanced Materials. Their study, titled Quantitative Assessment of Fungal Biomarkers in Clinical Samples via an Interface Modulated Optical Fiber Biosensor, sheds light on the urgent need for improved early detection methods for invasive fungal infections, particularly those caused by Candida, which claim 2 million lives annually worldwide.

The research team, including co-corresponding authors Professor Guan Baiou, Professor Zhang Hong, and Professor Huang Yunyun, along with co-first authors Chen Pengwei, Wu Haotian, and Zhao Yajing, has developed a cutting-edge technology that revolutionizes the detection process for fungal infections. By introducing a long-period fiber optic grating sensor with nanoplasma interface sensitization, they have successfully reduced the detection time from 24 hours to a mere 30 minutes. This significant advancement not only allows for prompt antifungal treatment but also addresses the challenges faced in underdeveloped regions with limited access to healthcare resources.
Supported by prestigious grants such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program, and the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, among others, this research marks a crucial milestone in the fight against invasive fungal infections. The team's innovative approach has the potential to transform clinical practice and alleviate the burden of delayed diagnosis in vulnerable communities.
