Nestled amidst lush forest cover, the Nanling Mountain stands as the back garden and pivotal atmospheric background area of Guangdong Province. Serving as a crucial atmospheric oxidation pool and carbon sink within the region, this pristine locale plays a vital role in air pollution mitigation and carbon neutrality efforts. The station's establishment signifies a pivotal step towards unraveling complex scientific inquiries surrounding urban forest-air interactions, including the origins of photochemical pollution and greenhouse gas dynamics.
Through collaborative efforts involving the science and technology department of Guangdong Province, Jinan University, Guangdong Ecological Environment Monitoring Center, Guangdong Shaoguan Ecological Environment Monitoring Center Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Guangdong Ecological Meteorology Center, and the local government bodies of Lechang City and Shaoguan City, the Nanling Mountain Forest Atmospheric Environment and Carbon Neutralization Field Scientific Observation and Research Station has been successfully established. This initiative has laid the foundation for a comprehensive research framework comprising three observation bases, two mobile observation platforms, and an advanced intelligent detection simulation system. The station has attracted a diverse team of esteemed scholars and experts, including academicians and promising young researchers, fostering a vibrant research environment with an average age of 40.
The station's primary objective is to conduct real-time continuous monitoring of key atmospheric components such as carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, and photochemical smog. By addressing data gaps in atmospheric and carbon neutrality research within forested regions surrounding the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the station aims to bolster scientific insights essential for enhancing air quality at both regional and national levels, ultimately contributing to the realization of ambitious carbon reduction goals.
