The 2023 International Symposium on Global Chinese Philanthropy was held on Dec. 15 and 16, jointly hosted by JNU's School of International Studies/Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies and the Asia Pacific Center (APC) of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In attendance were more than 50 scholars and experts from renowned universities and research institutes in China and abroad, including UCLA, Université du Littoral, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Nankai University and Jinan University.
JNU Vice President Zhang Xiaoxin and Prof. Zhou Min, a member of the American National Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and director of APC, delivered opening remarks.
Zhang extended a warm welcome and gratitude to the attendees and briefed them on JNU's history as a century-old paramount school for overseas Chinese students, as well as its basic profile. Zhou said APC’s global Chinese philanthropy research program was seeking more new university partners to establish a closer network of academic relationships and to take the global Chinese philanthropy program to a new height through public lectures and international symposiums.
With the theme of global Chinese philanthropy's transformative impacts during and after global crisis, the symposium promoted the study of global Chinese philanthropy; disseminated the great contributions of overseas Chinese to philanthropy; and raised awareness and understanding among the public and university teachers and students about public welfare, philanthropy and volunteerism. Teachers and students from universities in North America, Asia and Europe gathered to discuss historical, political, economic, cultural and social issues related to global Chinese philanthropy from the perspective of interdisciplinary academic research.
