Jinan University recently took a significant step in addressing climate change with the completion of the “Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region Climate Change Assessment Report.” Led by Professor Shao Min and involving the participation of numerous experts, the report marks a crucial scientific and technological advancement in combating climate change in the Hong Kong and Macao region.

Preparation of the report was a substantial undertaking, with strong support from the governments of Hong Kong and Macau, providing valuable resources and technological assistance. After extensive research and deliberation, experts unanimously recognized the unique advantages and responsibilities of the Hong Kong and Macao regions in addressing climate change. As a result, they submitted policy recommendations to the Ministry of Science and Technology, emphasizing the need to prevent major climate disaster risks in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. The proposed policies aim to enhance climate adaptation capacity and mitigate potential climate disasters, particularly in light of challenges such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and ecological changes.
The publication of the Hong Kong and Macao Special Report signifies a significant milestone in addressing climate change in the region, providing essential technological support and informing policy decisions related to climate change, low-carbon economic transformation, and global climate governance. It also serves as a testament to China's commitment and capability in addressing climate change on the global stage.
Looking ahead, Jinan University is committed to further collaboration with Hong Kong and Macao in climate change initiatives, aiming to expand research areas and content, leverage regional strengths, and contribute innovative solutions to accelerate the sustainable development of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area and the nation as a whole.
