The 21st Symposium on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Natural Medicine and the 12th CPA-KSP-JSP* Joint Symposium on Pharmacognosy were held in Guangzhou in Nov. 25 and 26, with over 600 experts and scholars from China, Japan and Korea attending.
With the theme of form synergy to jointly promote the high-quality development of the disciplines and industries of TCM and natural medicine in China, the symposium centered on the research trends and latest achievements in TCM and natural medicine resources; efficient discovery of active substances; biosynthesis and biomimetic synthesis; mechanism of drug action and targets; quality standards; secondary development of TCM products, and research and development of new medicines. Renowned experts in the fields were invited to give over 100 lectures during the symposium. Prof. Ye Wencai, director of the JNU National Key Laboratory of Bioactive Molecules and Drugability Optimization, presided over the opening ceremony.

Sun Xianze, president of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, noted that because of improved living standards and the aging population, demand for medicines, especially traditional Chinese medicines and natural drug products, were increasing in China, requiring the development of pharmaceutical science and technology. With the development of globalization and science and technology, the pharmaceutical science and technology sector is witnessing increasingly fierce competition, Sun added. Therefore, he said, people must seize the opportunity, face the challenge, and continuously strengthen scientific and technological innovation and talent cultivation to achieve higher-level development of medical science and technology in China.
