The unveiling ceremony of JNU's Weng Xianliang Translation Research Center and the High-Level Forum on the Development of the Translation Discipline were held at JNU on Nov. 19. The plaque was jointly unveiled by Prof. Xia Quan, deputy secretary of the JNU Party Committee; Prof. Cha Mingjian, vice president of Shanghai International Studies University; Prof. Nie Zhenzhao of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies; Profs. He Gangqiang and Gao Yongwei of Fudan University; Prof. Chai Mingcheng of Shanghai International Studies University; Prof. Wang Dongfeng of Sun Yat-sen University; Yang Jie, director of JNU's  Social Science Research Department; and Prof. Pu Ruoqian dean of JNU's College of Foreign Studies and director of the center.

Xia said the center's establishment was an important JNU response to the national Belt and Road initiative, cultivating high-quality translation talents and disseminating Chinese culture to the world. Pu said the College of Foreign Studies would take the opportunity to accelerate the development of the translation discipline and carry out in-depth translation research, including the application of scientific research projects; the establishment of translation corpora and terminology databases;  research on literary translation, and the cultivation of translation talents.

Weng Ziqi, the daughter of Prof. Weng Xianliang, gave an introduction to Weng's life experience, translation achievements, academic contributions and life at JNU. He was deputy director and a professor in JNU's School of Foreign Studies, editor in chief of World Literature and Art,  director of the China English Language Education Association, director of the China Association for the Study of American Literature, vice president of the Guangdong Chinese Language Association and chairman of the Guangzhou Translators Association. The Chinese translation of English poems is one of Weng's outstanding achievements. He was a fluent translator, and his translations were easy to understand. The method of translating ancient poems in prose that he advocated was even more unique and had a far-reaching impact.

At the forum, the participating scholars focused on the development of the translation discipline. They also discussed how to further construct the discourse system of Chinese translation studies, build a translation research community, and make unique contributions as Chinese scholars to the international translation community.
