JNU's College of Chinese Language and Culture, formerly known as the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Student Tutoring School, celebrated its 70th anniversary on JNU's Guangyuan Dong Campus in Guangzhou on Oct. 28.
The college was established in 1993 through the integration of the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Student Tutoring School, established in 1953, with JNU's Faculty of Chinese as a Foreign Language (1985), and Preparatory Department (1925), with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the State Council's Overseas Chinese Affairs Office. Committed to international education in Chinese culture and language, it is a specialized college providing Chinese culture education, international Chinese language education, and preparatory education for students from overseas, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
JNU Party Secretary Lin Rupeng reviewed the historical connection between JNU and the tutoring school. Over the last 30 years, he said, the college has remained true to its original mission, nurturing many outstanding talents, producing significant innovative achievements, and making remarkable contributions to international education in Chinese culture and language.
Pang Guomei, director of the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, said the college, as a leading domestic and internationally renowned center of research and dissemination for Chinese language and culture, played a vital role in promoting overseas Chinese affairs. She also said she hoped it could continue to foster connections among overseas Chinese, unite them and further contribute to Guangdong’s overseas affairs in the new era.
Shao Yi, dean of the college, gave a comprehensive overview of its recent development and academic achievements in terms of historical evolution, academic programs and talent cultivation. Over the last 70 years, he said, the college has educated more than 110,000 students from over 100 countries and regions. It has developed a multi-level, multi-type education system, covering non-degree language education and undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs, both in China and internationally.
On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the college received congratulatory letters from institutions of Chinese language and culture education and universities in China and abroad. The college also held a Forum on the Inheritance and Dissemination of Chinese Language and the Construction of International Chinese Education Disciplines during the celebration, attended by over 30 renowned experts and professors from various Chinese universities.
