The first National Graduate Supervisors Training Seminar was held from May 24 to 26, organized by the Ministry of Education's China Academic Degree and Graduate Education Development Center, under the guidance of the ministry's Department of Degree Management and Postgraduate Education. Three JNU graduate supervisors attended: Fan Jun, vice dean of the School of Medicine; Liao Junyun, deputy head of the School of Management's marketing department; and Wu Shu from the College of Life Science and Technology, according to the arrangement of Guangdong Department of Education.
Aiming to encourage and guide the JNU graduate supervisors to shoulder their responsibilities conscientiously, improve their ability to cultivate talents and communicate more with other supervisors, the Graduate School interviewed the supervisors who attended the seminar,
Shi Yigong, the president of Westlake University, based on his own experience, shared with us supervisors his novel, unique, and inspiring thoughts on nurturing first-class innovators, Fan said. In addition, the training experts also shared their interpretations and experience of topics of common concern to us, such as ethics in scientific research, thesis quality control, and uneasy supervisor-student relations and how to mitigate them. Fan said the supervisors also visited the universities and research institutes such as Westlake University, where it learned about the unique orientation and training system, and Zhijiang Lab, where its fruitful research achievements were discussed.
Liao said he was honored to be selected by JNU to attend the seminar and share some of his insights. First, supervisors should be practitioners adhering to the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, he said. Second, they should be pioneers brave to blaze new trails. Third, they should be warm-hearted people, teaching and guiding with kindness.”
Wu said: In this seminar, leaders from relevant functional departments of the Ministry of Education and famous lecturers from universities were invited by the organizer to systematically introduce the policy and reform direction of graduate education, thesis quality control, the building of supervisor-student relations, and the construction of teachers' professional ethics and the supervisor team. All this gave me a comprehensive and profound understanding of this content.
