General Secretary Xi Jinping said during his inspection of JNU on Oct. 24, 2018, that he hoped the university would adhere to its school-running characteristics, improve itself and thus create better conditions for overseas Chinese to return to their homeland to learn and inherit Chinese culture.

More than 100,000 JNU alumni from Hong Kong and Macao have always firmly supported the one country, two systems policy, making positive contributions to maintaining the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao. The number of Chinese students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas at JNU exceeds one-third of the total at Chinese mainland universities. Twelve think-tank units, including JNU's Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies, have been selected as the source think tanks for the Chinese Think Tank Index.

JNU's pharmacy discipline has entered the second list of China's world-class discipline construction. The university has gained two new national liberal arts research platforms. National key laboratories have reported breakthroughs and various disciplines have made significant progress in the fifth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education. This year JNU has 17 disciplines ranking in the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators, nine more than in 2018; JNU ranks second in Guangdong. JNU ranked 35th among Chinese mainland universities in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, rising 10 places from 2018.

JNU has added one UNESCO Chairs Program. It has 147 alumni associations around the world, with more than 400,000 alumni actively spreading Chinese culture. JNU revised the Chinese language textbook series Zhong Wen, which has distributed more than 40 million copies overseas.

The second phase of Panyu campus construction has been officially approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and is expected to be completed in 2026.
