The annual meeting on anthropological and ethnological sciences in China, organized by the China Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (CUAES) and co-sponsored by Jinan University, was held online from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1. Its theme was the consolidation of the Chinese nation's sense of community in the process of building a modern socialist nation. Over 500 experts and scholars attended, from more than 80 universities and research institutes, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Minzu University of China, the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, Yunnan University and Zhejiang University.
At the opening ceremony, Zhao Yong, executive vice president of CUAES, said the Union should serve as a think tank for the Party’s ethnic work in the new era, strengthen theoretical research and practical exploration, and promote the commercialization of research results. As a liaison of anthropology and ethnology in China, it should serve as a bridge between the government and scholars and among scholars. To boost development of anthropology and ethnology with distinctive Chinese characteristics, it should contribute to the discipline. As a bellwether for the exchanges between the educational circle of anthropology and ethnology and the international community, it should conduct deep communication and cooperation with research institutes, experts and scholars all over the world, and communicate the community for the Chinese nation well. To be the informationist of relevant social conditions and public opinions, it should pay close attention to the social realities.
The meeting held 21 conferences on topics including Sharing a Better Life: Consolidating the Basis and Motivation of the Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation; Practical Paths and Regional Experiences of Extensive Interaction and Integration Among Ethnic Groups; Research on International Communication of Chinese Cultural Symbols Shared by Ethnic Groups, and Consolidating the Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation and the Development of Anthropology and Ethnology.
Nearly 400 academic papers were submitted for the annual meeting, with 61 selected as excellent. The next annual meeting will be co-sponsored by Fudan University.
