Two JNU projects made the lists of major projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China and key research projects in philosophy and social science in 2022, announced by the National Office of Philosophy and Social Science and the Ministry of Education. They are “The Monographic Study, Classification Compilation and Database Construction of Historical Data on Chinese Literature in Southeast Asia,” led by Wang Lieyao of the College of Liberal Arts, and “The Role of Overseas Chinese Federations in National Public Diplomacy,” led by Li Minghuan of the School of International Studies and Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies.
In addition, the Ministry of Education named “Improving the Governance System of State-Owned Assets With Chinese Characteristics,” led by Li Wenjing of the School of Management, a key research project in philosophy and social science. “The Evolution of Foreign Powers’ Position on South China Sea and China’s Rights Protection,” led by Guo Yuan of the College of Liberal Arts, was named a key project of the National Social Science Fund.
The fund supported 15 major projects from JNU in 2022. In addition to the four above, these projects were approved:
•Xia Quanfen of the College of Liberal Arts was approved for one major special project and one major commissioned project to study the consciousness of the Chinese national community.
•Zhang Xiaoxin of the School of International Studies and the Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies was approved for one major commissioned project.
•Chen Chuanglian and Feng Shuaizhang of the School of Economics were approved for one major special project and one key project respectively on studying and interpreting the spirit of the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Communist Party of China Central Committee.
•Yu Zhuangxiong of the School of Economics, Zheng Shiming of the School of Public Administration and Emergency Management; and Li Yunfei, Wu Qing and Liu Xinzhong of the College of Liberal Arts were approved for one key project each supported by the National Social Science Fund.
•Lin Shengliang of the School of Journalism and Communication was approved for one key project supported in its later stage by the National Social Science Fund of China.
In terms of disciplines, there are three projects in applied economics; two each in Chinese history, world history, politics and management; and one each in journalism and communication, linguistics, Chinese literature, and religious studies. Among them, eight research projects related to the United Front account for more than half the total.
The major projects and leaders
Wang Lieyao
Wang Lieyao, previously dean of JNU's College of Liberal Arts and president of the China World Association for Chinese Literatures, is honorary president of that association and secretary general of the China World League for Chinese Literatures. Long devoted to the study of literature from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas Chinese, he has published more than 100 academic papers in journals including Literary Review and Literary Studies, as well as more than 10 academic monographs. He has presided over and completed seven national and provincial projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China. He has won Outstanding Achievement Award of Social Sciences multiple times.
Wang's project comprehensively collates historical materials in Southeast Asian Chinese literature produced from 1881 to 2021. This project carries out special academic research on historical materials of Southeast Asian Chinese literature. It also constructs such materials with academic value and methodological significance and the poetics of Chinese cultural community with Southeast Asian regional characteristics. The research mainly come from five historical materials, including important writers' works, literary influence, ideological debate, literature media and academic historical materials.
Li Minghuan
Li Minghuan, a distinguished professor in JNU's School of International Studies/Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies and Xiamen University's School of Public Affairs, is the chief expert on major projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China. She is also president of the International Society for the Studies of Chinese Overseas and vice president of the Overseas Chinese History Society of China. She has received a special allowance from the State Council.
The All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese is a bridge of the Communist Party of China and the government to contact overseas Chinese and their relatives, both returned and abroad. This project will summarize how the federation plays an important role in the work of overseas Chinese affairs of the Communist Party of China and the government. It will discuss how to continue leveraging the federation's advantages in conducting public diplomacy in the new journey, promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, and create a new form of civilization.
Li Wenjing
Li Wenjing, a professor and dean of JNU's School of Management, is a Young Chang Jiang Scholar. He has presided over 10 major projects of the Ministry of Education in philosophy and social sciences. His research has won second and third prizes in the Science Research Famous Achievement Award in Higher Institution, and first prize in the Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards of Guangdong Province three times. Li is the host of the national Curriculum Ideological and Political Demonstration course and national first-class course. He also won first prize in the second National Teaching Innovation Competition and second prize in the fourth National Teaching Competition for Young Teachers in Colleges and Universities.
Based on the theory and system of national governance with Chinese characteristics, Li’s project sorts out the institutional relationship between the governance structure and its operation mechanism to deal with existing problems of the state-owned assets governance system. It also improves the system’s theoretical and analytical framework with Chinese characteristics. The project expounds on a feasible path and concrete measures to improve that system through the construction of systems for digital accounting evaluation, decision-making management and supervision.
Guo Yuan
Guo Yuan, a professor and doctoral supervisor in the Institute of Sino-Foreign Relations of JNU's College of Liberal Arts, studies the history of the South China Sea territory. He has published more than 30 CSSCI papers in the last 20 years and has undertaken many major projects, key projects, general projects and youth projects of the National Social Science Fund of China. He has published four monographs on the territory of the South China Sea.
Guo's project studies the origin and development of foreign powers' occupation of the Nanhai Islands and its influence on the geopolitical situation in the South China Sea. It also looks at the different roles the government, scholars and media played in protecting rights in the South China Sea. Meanwhile, it discusses the reasonableness of the statements that some countries have made on the issue by using Principles of International Law.
