JNU livestreamed the 2022 Basic Law Knowledge Q&A Contest, open to all university students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, to universities across China on Nov. 26. The contest was sponsored by the Ministry of Education's Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office, and the Liaison Offices of the Hong Kong and Macao governments.
In a welcome speech, JNU Deputy Party Secretary Sun Yu said the contest was of great significance in popularizing the constitution and basic law for students in the 25th-anniversary year of Hong Kong's return to China. This was not only the implementation of a holistic approach to national security, he said, but also a necessary move to uphold the basic state policy of one country, two systems and maintain the prosperity and stability of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Shu Gangbo, deputy director of the Ministry of Education's Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office, said he hoped students would take the event as an opportunity to enhance their senses of identity and belonging to the motherland and promote their overall quality and cultivation of legal knowledge. In doing so, he said, they could contribute to the construction of the Greater Bay Area, the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao, and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
The event began with Basic Law for All, attracting over 4,000 participants from 91 colleges and universities in the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao. After an intense session online, teams representing 12 universities advanced to the second stage.
Nanjing Normal University won the special prize; Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and Southern Medical University first prize; South China University of Technology, China University of Political Science and Law, and Sun Yat-sen University second prize; and the University of Macau, JNU, Wuhan University, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Beijing Normal University and Fudan University third prize.
