To celebrate Children's Day on June 1, give children a more intuitive experience of Chinese herbal medicine and promote traditional Chinese medicine culture, JNU's College of Pharmacy held open house in the TCM herbarium and the academic lecture hall. The activity had four parts: explaining the herbarium, popularizing science, making do-it-yourself perfume bags and watching fun films.
Through TCM specimens, vivid animation, scientific and rigorous explanation and introduction, and hands-on pouch-making, children ages 2 to 12 learned about TCM. The activity stimulated their interest, broadened their knowledge and enhanced their practical ability, cultivating cultural confidence from childhood. The guides explained the classification of plant morphology and species in detail, and introduced the plant morphology of common edible medicinal materials, such as rhubarb leaves, ginseng leaves, female ginseng and Chinese wolfberry. They also described the treatment process, from herbal medicine to medicinal materials.
Through close observation, children learned about TCM specimens at close range and acquired a comprehensive understanding of TCM knowledge, including specimens from ocean creatures, wax leaf specimens and soaked specimens.
In the perfume pouch area, Angelica dahurica, citronella, Acorus calamus and mugwort were selected for them to make their own pouches.
In another activity, funny animations of “Liuwei Dihuang Pill,”Huoxiang ZhengqiWater, Hua Tuo's Story and Zhang Zhongjing's Story were prepared for the children to watch.
