Guan, dean of the College of Science and Engineering and the Institute of Photonics Technology, has long been engaged in fiber optical sensing technology and application and has made breakthroughs in improving biological sensitivity of fiber optical sensors to single-molecule level. As a result, he charts a new course for tumor diagnosis and treatment at early stage through fiber‐optic theragnostic. He is also a pioneer in tilt angle fibers optical sensing technology, which allows a real-time angle detection of Guangzhou's landmark Canton Tower. He has also achieved rapid response of long-distance distributed fiber optical sensors, realizing continuous measurement covering 100 kilometers within five seconds. This technology also ensures the security of national major infrastructures because it is applied to online monitoring of the Litang-Guilin part of the West-East Electricity Transmission Project and the Hengyang-Nanning and Guiyang-Guangzhou high-speed railways.
