JNU's team won a gold medal in the finals of the seventh China International College Students Internet+ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. It was JNU's first gold medal and best result in its participation to date.
The winning project, Data Protection: Forerunner of Data Element Circulation Security Industry, was carried out by a team from the College of Information Science and Technology/College of Cyber Security. Overcoming difficulties, the team entered the national finals, continuing the tradition of turning research into products.
The competition, which kicked off at Nanchang University on Oct. 14, attracted more than 9.56 million students from 4,347 colleges and universities in 121 countries and territories, involving 2.28 million projects. Teams from the world's top 100 universities, including Harvard and Oxford, took part, and 1,085 projects were shortlisted for the finals.
Hong Ying, the JNU team's instructor, said of the winning project: If we compare an ordinary password to a door without sound insulation, the encryption algorithm our team developed can be compared to a 'soundproof door' with a high degree of confidentiality in our private space. It can also make this door more invisible. We hope to provide users an intangible but substantial protection.
With this sense of social responsibility to safeguard national data security, the team of seven postgraduates, six graduate students and two undergraduates is committed to implementing the project.

The team plans to continue working in the field of network data security in the long term and, by cooperating with large enterprises, enhance the implementation and application of the products, providing new products and services for the country and society.
