In 1978, to serve overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan returning to China for medical treatment, on the initiative of Liao Chengzhi, then vice chairman of the National People's Congress, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the establishment of the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Hospital, also the affiliated teaching hospital of JNU's Medical College.
The hospital was officially opened in 1981 and renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University in 2001. At the preliminary stage, under the dispatch of Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the hospital hired more than 170 highly influential medical teaching staff members and famous teachers, who became a powerful driving force for the hospital’s development.

Also held at the celebration were the inauguration and recruitment ceremonies of JNU's China-Russia Medical Research Center and Institute of Chronic Diseases.
The medical university alliance between China and Russia was proposed by Yang Baofeng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and jointly launched by Harbin Medical University and the First Moscow State Medical University. The alliance of more than 120 high-level medical universities in China and Russia, including JNU, is the largest cooperative alliance between Chinese and Russian universities with the largest numbers of participating colleges and universities.
Chronic diseases have become a serious public health issue that threatens the health of the Chinese people and affects the country’s economic and social development. The construction of the Institute of Chronic Diseases will be incorporated into the high-level hospital construction plan, and JNU’s Chronic Disease Key Laboratory will be built on the basis of two existing laboratories, the Academician Joint Laboratory and the Central Laboratory, relying on teams of principal investigators from relevant clinical and research institutes of the hospital.
On Nov. 7, the academic forum for medical students of the fourth Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Medical and Health Development Forum was held in the conference room of the Academic Lecture Hall on Shipai Campus. Through several forums, discussions were held on discipline construction, talent innovation, smart-hospital construction, hospital culture and mechanism construction, providing a good communication platform among the three cities for medical academic discussion, hospital management experience exchange and medical personnel training.
