JNU Party Secretary Lin Rupeng, a member of the 1986 journalism class, said JNU's journalism and communication discipline had been a traditional advantage that originated in Shanghai and developed in Guangdong. The School of Journalism and Communication, established in 2001, has become an academic center and the cradle nurturing media talents in South China, he said.
Fan Yijin -- former president of Nanfang Daily, honorary president of JNU's School of Journalism and Communication and a 1964 JNU graduate -- said the discipline's third-place ranking nationwide and the founding of the school's alumni association both reflect concerted efforts from the school, alumni, teachers and students. Alumni have spread all over the country, as well as to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao and 19 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
