Date: Sept. 24, 2021

Author: Fu Xiaoling , Ni Xinyu

(Nie Hong)

Born into a medical family, Prof. Nie Hong once practiced medicine in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province in southwest China, inheriting her family values of kindness and compassion.

After finishing her postdoctoral scientific research work in 2003, Nie was invited to start her teaching career in JNU's College of Pharmacy. Recalling the time when she was promoted to a full professor in 2008, she said, Though I was already 38 then, deep down I still felt that I had so much to improve in my scientific research. So I wanted to go to top universities abroad to further my studies.

She went to Yale University as a visiting scholar and, within five years, won three projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation. Admission to One of the projects, Sino-German Scientist Cooperation and Exchanges (direct funding of 1.3 million yuan) is highly competitive.

Nie's team engages principally in optimization strategy and practices of Chinese patent medicine, investigating and exploring the efficacy and safety of Chinese patent medicines currently on the market.

Her project Optimization Strategy and Practices of Chinese Patent Medicine: Shengxiong Glueose Injection and Angong Niuhuang Pill won second prize in the Scientific and Technological Achievements Awards, sponsored by the Guangdong Pharmacological Society, in June 2019. Another project, Strategy and Practices on Application of Cell Membrane Immobilized Chromatography Fishing on Bioactive Ingredients of TCMs and New Drug Development, won second prize in the New Technology Application Achievement Awards.

Her course Medical Herbology and Pharmacology is very popular. One student commented: She's good at analyzing real-life medical cases to explore and digging deeper in knowledge.”

Another course, Traditional Chinese Medicine Pharmacology: Learn to Be Your Health Therapist in a Chinese-English bilingual version, was rated as a first-class online open course in Guangdong in 2020. Its English version was selected for the first group of English classes launched on the Higher Education Institutions online teaching platform initiated by the Ministry of Education, with over 30,000 students signing up.
