The JNU Chaozhou Cultural Research Institute's opening ceremony and its development and construction seminar were held on JNU's main campus on Sept. 16. In attendance were JNU President Song Xianzhong; Ke Rongqing, a JNU trustee and chairman of Guangzhou Luxiang Investment Co., Ltd.; and nearly 60 experts and business representatives from other universities, cultural institutes and enterprises.

Song said the institute relied on the Collaborative Innovation Center for the Inheritance and Communication of Chinese Culture in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas. It will be based on the culture of Chaozhou, a city in eastern Guangdong, with the mission of transmitting, disseminating and innovating Chaozhou culture. By fostering and gathering the high-level research and application talents of the study of Chaozhou and other related disciplines globally, it will build a platform for national and global research on Chaozhou culture and a major place for passing on and communicating it, effectively promoting its transmission and communication in the new era and facilitating its transmission and development worldwide.

At the ceremony, Prof. Chen Pingyuan was appointed the first dean of the institute and director of its academic committee, and Cheng Guofu, dean of JNU's Academy of Chinese Studies, was appointed the first director of the institute's council. The institute has a council and an academic committee. The former consists of heads of the collaborative innovation centers and organizations in China and abroad that care about and support the development of Chaozhou culture; the latter consists of experts and scholars in China and aboard who are vigorous and able to participate in the institute's work.
Ke donated 10 million yuan as the first donation to the Chaozhou Cultural Development Fund.

In the seminar, experts attending the ceremony discussed the transmission and communication of Chaozhou culture as well as deepening systematic research into it, strengthening the combination of the historical research and practical research, promoting its innovation and development, and strengthening the cultural identity of overseas Chinese with Chaozhou culture as a link.
