Prof. Xin Hongbao and his team in JNU's Institute of Nanophotonic shave published a review paper titled Biophotonic probes for bio-detection and imaging in the journal Light: Science & Applications. Pan Ting, a specially appointed researcher in the institute, is the lead author.
Based on earlier research by Xin's team, this paper introduces the design of biophotonic probes from abundant natural materials, particularly biological entities such as virus, cells and tissues. The paper systematically reviews advances in biophotonic probes for bio-detection and imaging from the perspective of light generation, to light transportation and light modulation. It also analyzes three representative biophotonic probes -- biological lasers, cell-based biophotonic waveguides and bio-microlenses -- with applications for bio-detection and imaging. Finally, it provides views on future opportunities and potential improvements for biophotonic probes.
