Liu Tao, a professor and doctoral supervisor in JNU's School of Journalism and Communication, won the National May Day Labor Medal and the school won the May Day Labor Award of Guangdong Province when the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) awarded May Day honors in Beijing on April 27.

Liu is engaged mainly in visual rhetoric and environmental communication studies. As a chief expert in major projects of the National Social Science Fund and winner of the Young Teacher Fund and Young Teacher Award of Fok Yingdong Education Foundation, given by the Ministry of Education, he was selected as the ministry’s 2017 Young Chang Jiang Scholar and was part of the third group of young top-notch talents of the National 10,000 Talents Program. His book Visual Rhetoric was selected as a National Philosophy and Social Science Achievement.

With a more than 70-years history, the School of Journalism & Communication originated in Shanghai and later upgraded in Guangdong. The school has implemented the running policy that has welcomed students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas since 1946.
