Nature Chemical Biology has published online the collaborative research titled Phospholipase iPLA2β Averts Ferroptosis by Eliminating a Redox Lipid Death Signal by the team of JNU Prof. He Rongrong and Prof. Valerian Kagan from the University of Pittsburgh, known as Pitt. Associate researcher Sun Wanyang from JNU's School of Pharmacy is the first author; He, from JNU's School of Traditional Chinese Medicine/School of Pharmacy, Kagan and his team member Yulia Tyurina are the co-corresponding authors.

In the research, mice with the iPLA2β mutant Parkinson's disease onset gene constructed by CRISPR-Cas9 technology showed Parkinson's syndrome at 3 months of age -- significantly earlier than the commonly used mice model with the Parkinson's SNCA A53T gene. This finding is expected to be applied in research on the pathological mechanism of Parkinson's and the development of intervention drugs. Meanwhile, with help from Kagan's team, JNU has built an oxidized detection platform.
