Ming Weijie, an associate professor in the School of Basic Medicine and Public Health, and his volunteer service team won the outstanding individual award and the outstanding team award, respectively, in honors for excellent volunteering team during the COVID-19 pandemic from the Guangdong Communist Youth League, the Guangdong Civilization Office and the Guangdong Volunteer Federation.
After the outbreak of COVID-19, Ming, who is from Hong Kong, quickly organized a youth volunteer service team for epidemic prevention and control. The team of around 100 was one of the earliest volunteer service teams in pandemic prevention and control.
Through online groups and WeChat, the team answered questions, popularized medical knowledge, stopped rumors and helped people stay safe.

During the online teaching period, Ming donated a month's salary to improve students’ online learning facilities. He was the subject of a documentary and reports in China Youth Daily and Chinanews.com. In October, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the China Youth Volunteer Association awarded him the title National Advanced Individual in Combatting COVID-19.
