JNU won 19 awards in the eighth Science Research Famous Achievement Awards in Higher Institution (Humanities and Social Sciences), announced by the Ministry of Education on Dec.17 -- a significant increase over last year's 8. Ranking 18th in China and second Guangdong, JNU won 1 first prize (its first), 12 second prizes, 5 third prizes and 1 youth achievement award.
Nine disciplines won awards: five in journalism and communication; three in management; two each in economics, history, linguistics and Chinese literature; and one each in international studies, art and political science. Nine winners were theses, eight publications and two consultancy service reports.
Dictionary of Chinese Dialectology by the linguist Zhan Bohui, honorary director of JNU's Center for Chinese Dialect Studies, won the first prize. The first large encyclopedic dictionary of dialectology in China's history, the book concisely describes major dialects throughout the country and systematically displays research results. It contains 4.65 million words and is divided into two volumes.
