The Shantou Drama Troupe brought The Letter, the first drama on Qiaopi -- a special kind of letter and remittance receipt sent by overseas Chinese to their families in China – to JNU on Dec. 17.
The Letter tells moving stories about overseas Chinese businessmen who love their country and family. Integrating unique folk elements of the Chaoshan area of eastern Guangdong and historical legends of Qiaopi, this drama with strong overseas Chinese features drew bursts of applause and laughter the nearly 1,500 teachers and students who attended.
The play, based on the history of Qiaopi in the Chaoshan area, depicts the period when the area was occupied during the Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945). Most Qiaopi writers came from in Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan provinces, home of most overseas Chinese.
JNU has always paid great attention to the education and cultivation of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and overseas Chinese students. The Letter gave teachers and students an opportunity to learn about overseas Chinese culture and enhanced the sense of community among the Chinese nation of teachers and students, especially from those areas.
