The annual conference of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Area Online Open Courses Alliance was held at JNU on Dec. 19. With the theme Integration, Innovation and Quality -- Innovative Development and Application of Online Open Courses in the Post-Pandemic Era, the conference demonstrated the construction, management and application of online open courses during the fight against COVID-19, diving into their integration, innovation and quality in the post-pandemic era.
Song Yi, inspector of Higher Education Department, noted that China ranks first worldwide in quantity and scale of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), greatly contributing to online teaching during the pandemic. Song also expressed his wishes for the alliance’s future development: to build first-class online open courses; to promote the sharing and application of online resources, thus making credit transfer more available in the Greater Bay Area; and to give full play to the Greater Bay Area's geographical advantages by building high-quality professional, humanities and international courses.

The alliance offers 1,600 courses to support online teaching in member colleges and universities, and it joins with them to provide training in online teaching methods, benefiting over 200,000 teachers. The alliance has made sustained efforts in sharing credit courses in colleges and universities in the Greater Bay Area and carried out cross-registration of credit course for three semesters, with 57,000 students selecting 510 cross-school electives involving over 40 institutions.
Experts at the conference shared their understanding and suggestions for online education and first-class courses from different perspectives, with in-depth discussion on the practice, reform and innovation of online education.
The alliance was founded on Nov. 24, 2018, through a joint initiative of 11 universities, including JNU, Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology. It is guided by the Guangdong Department of Education, with JNU as its presiding unit.
