JNU's Zhuhai campus organized a traditional Chinese coming-of-age ceremony on Nov. 18 for Macao and Hong Kong students in Luyi Temple, Doumen District, with the theme of pursuing dreams in the Greater Bay Area and shouldering the responsibility of youth. The event was intended to pass down traditional Chinese culture and enhance exchanges among students from Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai, cultivating their sense of responsibility to contribute to the construction of the Greater Bay Area and the revitalization of rural areas.
(The students taking an oath of adulthood)
Dressing in traditional Han costumes, the students from Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai walked to the front of their teachers, attended the capping ceremony for boys and the hair-pinning ceremony for girls, and took the coming-of-age oath. Ke Haowen, a Macao freshman majoring in law in School of Humanities on the Zhuhai campus, led students in reading out the oath together. Heaven blesses us while Earth Mother nurtures all things, they read. The descendants of the dragon receive glories from the east. Live our life like summer flowers, being positive and energetic toward life.”
The students had a worship ceremony honoring the Yellow Emperor Xuanyuan for passing on traditional Chinese civilization and making contributions to motherland; teachers and elders for their perseverance in teaching; and parents for their upbringing. Parent and teacher representatives expressed their expectations for the youths.
The students also visited Jie Xia Zhuang Village to gain a special understanding of rural culture and folk customs. They organized a field trip to experience the actual living environment of villagers in Doumen village and learn about how this 600-year-old village achieved rural revitalization by improving the rural architectural style, disposing of sewage and waste, constructing infrastructure, and passing on the historical culture.
As a student, inheriting traditional Chinese culture starts with me, said Zhao Wencong from Hong Kong. “I will participate in more and more traditional activities, and influence friends from Hong Kong and all over the country to know the essence of China and inherit traditional Chinese culture.”
