The project Innovation in International Food Education for Countries Along the Belt and Road is on the list of New Agriculture Academic Research and Reform Projects released on Aug. 27by the Ministry of Education's Department of Higher Education. The project, whose approval represents a breakthrough for JNU, is led by Bai Weibing, a professor of food science and engineering in JNU's School of Science and Engineering.

The reform has set up 407 programs covering research and practice of new ideas in academic agriculture development ideas; practice of major optimization and reform in agriculture; reform and practice of new agriculture and forestry personnel cultivation; practice of collaborative education mechanisms; and reform and practice of high-quality culture construction.
Founded in 2001, JNU's Department of Food Science and Engineering is part of the School of Science and Engineering. It grew out of the food chemistry major set up in 1985. The department offers four undergraduate programs: food science and engineering; food quality and safety; food science and engineering, and food quality and Safety, these last two in the International School.
JNU'S food science and engineering discipline was approved as a key discipline of Guangdong Province in 2012 and as a provincial food science and engineering experiment and teaching center in 2013. This year, the discipline ranks 41st globally and 9th domestically in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. JNU's agricultural science supported by the discipline is in the top 0.42% on ESI's ranking list.
