JNU's School of Journalism and Communication launched the fourth episode in its practical speech communication series on TikTok on May 29. The episode, I Am a Journalist on the Scene: A Seven-Hour Omnimedia Strategy of Online Reporting for Sichuan Airlines 3U8633 Emergency Backup and Landing,” was one of a series of online live courses for public service. The activity was hosted by Associate Prof. Lin Xiaoyu, director of the Department of Speech Communication. Gu Jie, a member of the 2015 broadcasting class who is the host of Sichuan Traffic Radio, was invited to review her experience as one of the winners in the 29th China News Awards with students and audiences through a TikTok connection on and explain omnimedia strategy for live coverage of breaking news. The live courses attracted an audience of over 13,000.

The lecture marked the official end of the live courses “Broadcasters With Outstanding 'Speech Performance': A Special Series Sharing Speech Communication Practice, launched by the School of Journalism and Communication on TikTok.
Since May, Lin has given four public classes on practice. The series combined current hot topics in communication and application in speech communication, with excellent alumni of JNU's broadcasting and hosting major invited to share their practical experience. According to statistics collected by TikTok, the series drew a total audience of 1,050,000, with the average number of viewers for a single episode exceeding that for 99.86% of TikTok's live broadcast activities

Lin, who has been in charge of the courses, said the series was specially launched by the Department of Speech Communication to meet the need of teachers, students and the general public during the epidemic. Meanwhile, the new teaching method was expected to deepen the content of the broadcasting and hosting discipline, broaden its professional extension, and strengthen the major's influence and publicity.

During epidemic prevention and control, teachers in the School of Journalism and Communication increasingly launched public classes on online platforms, including TikTok live, Rain Classroom and Tencent Meeting. Since online public classes have earned recognition from students and the public since the rollout, the school plans to develop more and further cooperate with platforms like TikTok, Tencent and Netease to enable students to go to university and acquire knowledge at home.
