JNU Vice President Ye Wencai was honored at the second awards ceremony of China's National Pioneer Innovation Award in Beijing on May 30, the fourth National Science and Technology Workers' Day.
China's National Pioneer Innovation Award is one of the major science and technology awards approved by the state, which also include the State Natural Science Award, the State Scientific and Technological Invention Award, and the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award. It is the second highest prize in science and technology in China. Awarded every three years to 10 research groups, the prize medal is given to no more than 30 scientific and technological workers, and fewer than 300 receive certificates of merit.

Ye, a doctoral tutor, is a distinguished professor of Changjiang Scholars of the Ministry of Education; a winner of the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth, and one of the top 100 distinguished people in Guangdong. He has engaged in research on Chinese medicine, active constituents of natural medicine, chemical biology of natural products and new natural medicine.
Ye won second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards and first prize in the Guangdong Science and Technology Awards. He also won first prize in China's industry-university-research cooperation project for his innovations and an honorable mention in the China Patent Awards. One of his works, The Research and Application of Triterpene and Its Saponin Constituents in Chinese Medicine and Natural Medicine, was listed among China's top 10 medical advances in 2017.
He has published more than 500 papers in internationally recognized SCI journals, such as the Journal of the American Chemical Society and Angewandte Chemie International Edition. He was one of Elsevier's most cited Chinese researchers from 2014 to 2018. He has been approved for more than 40 patents in China and abroad, and has obtained one clinical research approval each for class I and class V new Chinese medicines. As a professor who teaches both undergraduates and postgraduates, Ye has cultivated more than 100 holders of master's degrees and doctorates.
