As International Nurses Day on May 12 was approaching, Huang Ailian, a renowned nursing educator and president emeritus of the Affiliated Nursing School of JNU, made a personal donation of 100,000 yuan and established the Scholarship for JNU Nursing Education.
Huang, 104, is a famous expert on nursing education in China. In the 1950s, faced with the backward nursing profession in China, she was determined to improve nursing education. She founded four nursing schools in succession: the Guangzhou Health School, the Guangzhou Nursing School, the Affiliated School of Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital and the Affiliated Nursing School of JNU.
She has donated her savings of 100,000 yuan to JNU as a charity fund, expressing her affection for the development of JNU and its students and encouraging JNUers to work hard.

Huang graduated from Peking Union Medical College’s Department of Nursing in July 1941. At the end of 1941, she worked as deputy chief nurse of the medical department and chief nurse of the surgical department at West China University in Chengdu. In 1947, she went to the United States to study hospital administration at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1949, before returning to China. Later she served as vice president and director of the nursing department of the First Affiliated Hospital of JNU from 1978 to 1984. She was awarded special government allowances from the State Council in 1992 and a lifetime achievement award from JNU in October 2006. Since 1993, she has held the titles of president emeritus of the Affiliated Nursing School of the Faculty of Medical Science, JNU; president emeritus of the Guangzhou Nursing School; honorary board chairman of the Guangdong branch of the Chinese Nursing Association; and geriatric nursing counselor to the academic committees of three provinces in central South China.
