Lu Weitao, a head nurse in the intensive care unit section 2 of JNU's First Affiliated Hospital, and Meng Heng, a deputy director of its Epilepsy Center, have been awarded the Guangdong Youth May 4 Medal by the China Communist Youth League of Guangdong and the Guangdong Youth Federation.
After the outbreak of Covid-19, three JNU medical teams totaling 89 medical workers, 65 of them under age 40, were sent to Hubei to assist in epidemic control. As the head nurse of ICU section 2, Lu was well aware of her responsibilities, so she canceled plans to travel with her family and left for Wuhan Hankou Hospital, arriving Feb. 18. Hearing that intensive-care specialists were needed in the west branch of Wuhan Union Hospital, she volunteered to lead ICU workers from Hankou Hospital to report for duty, and she treated confirmed Covid-19 patients in critical condition.

Before the Spring Festival, Meng had asked the First Affiliated Hospital to send him to aid Hubei in the fight against epidemic. As a member of the 22nd Guangdong medical team and the third JNU medical team supporting Hubei, he rushed to Wuhan on Feb. 21.
Meng led the medical group that took over the Covid-19 treatment ward at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. He later led the group to work at Leishenshan Hospital, showing iron will in fighting against the coronavirus to the end.
