Two original papers by JNU medical researchers have been published in major international journals. Sympathetic nerves positively regulate eosinophil-driven allergic conjunctivitis via α1-adrenergic receptor signaling” has been published in American Journal of Pathology, an international medical magazine, and “Acute tobacco smoke exposure exacerbates the inflammatory response to corneal wounds in mice via the sympathetic nervous system”in Communications Biology, a subjournal of Nature Communications.
These two studies, based on ocular surface hypersensitivity model and corneal trauma model, revealed the molecular mechanisms of how sympathetic nerves modulate the ocular surface inflammatory process through corresponding neurotransmitter receptors on the surface of inflammatory cells. Liu Jun, associate researcher in the Ophthalmology Institute, is the first author of the first paper, and Xiao Chengju, a postgraduate in regenerative medicine, is first author of the second.Corresponding author for both Li Zhijie, a professor in the School of Medicine.

The project's main research platforms were the School of Medicine's Ophthalmology Institute and the Key Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine Education. It received funds from the National Natural Science Foundation, China's Postdoctoral Fund and the Guangdong Provincial Doctor Start Fund. During its implementation, this project was also strongly supported by Prof.Yang Xuesong and Associate Prof. Wang Guang of the School of Medicine and Prof. Gu Jianqin of Henan People's Hospital.
