The four-year project “Health Hazard Assessment Technology for Common Food Contaminants,” hosted by Prof. Bai Weibin, a researcher in the food discipline team of JNU's College of Science and Engineering, has received 6.5 million RMB from the Guangdong Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong in the second batch of the 2018-2019 Guangdong Provincial R&D Project in Key Areas.
The project is led by JNU, in cooperation with South China University of Technology, the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Southern Medical University and Guangdong Qualico Inspection Co., Ltd. It aims to solve food contamination problems, including longer detection time, low efficiency, poor specificity and great toxic side effects, by finding methods to identify food pollutants rapidly; developing hazard identification and detection systems for common pollutants in high-throughput and high-sensitivity foods; establishing an intelligent system of cell analysis; and producing probiotics, detoxification enzymes and purification agents with high efficiency, specificity and low toxic effects.
The department has implemented the project to further inspire innovation since 2018. It attaches more importance to problem and demand orientation; vigorously innovates project selection methods and formation mechanisms; actively responds to state key projects in science and technology; strengthens the leading role of innovation in core technology, and makes great efforts to complete these projects.
