R.A. Barrera Concha, mayor of Merida, Mexico, accompanied by Bai Yi ,President of the Chinese Federation of Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, and a delegation of nine other municipal officials, visited JNU on June 13. Vice President Zhang Hong met with the delegation, and the two sides signed a letter of intent to cooperater.

Zhang said many of JNU's achievements in recent years could not have been made without the contributions of partners, and JNU will continue to actively expand mutually beneficial partnerships in the future. Though humanities and social sciences have traditionally been JNU's dominant disciplines, he said, there is still a lot of room for cooperation in biomedicine, science and engineering after JNU’s positive results in recent years. JNU plans to send a delegation Mexico in October and looks forward to a in-depth contacts with Mexican universities and implementing the intention of cooperation.
Concha expressed his sincere desire to enhance exchanges and cooperation. As a representative of the highest level of education in southern Mexico, Merida attracts a large number of Chinese students to study there. To further promote two-way communication among students, Merida plans to introduce a series of incentive policies, such as providing scholarships for Mexican students studying in China and full-time security supervision for Chinese students they admit.
On behalf of the Hualian Association, Bai expressed his wish to promote the exchange of teachers and students between Mexican universities and JNU. He said setting up Chinese language-teaching projects at Mexican universities and organizing students to go to Mexico for short-term study tours would be given higher priority in the future.
