A JNU team project led by Prof. He Rongrong of the College of Pharmacy's institute for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and natural medicine research won first prize in the Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Awards. The project, Chinese medicine efficacy evaluation based on disease susceptibility and application, was conducted jointly with several companies, including Guangzhou Baiyun Mountain JingXiuTang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Working from the traditional evaluation methods of Western medicine, He's team took disease susceptibility as the breakthrough point under the guidance of traditional Chinese medicine theory. This project established an experimental animal model of emotional factors that induce disease susceptibility, using a variety of psychological stress models, and analyzed active parts and components of the product on the basis of clear pharmacodynamic characterization. It provides a new method for evaluating the efficacy of TCM.
This evaluation method, which eliminates the bottleneck in proving the efficacy of TCM, is a great step forward for TCM in going global and modern. Based on this method, He’s team has moved on to secondary development of TCM categories and further promotion. The method also plays an important role in guiding clinical prescription, checking high-quality standards and realizing product upgrades. In addition, it brings remarkable financial gains. The sales volume of related products in Jingshengtang and other drugstores hit 9.71 billion yuan ($1.407 billion), with a net gain of 1.54 billion yuan ($223.165 million).

He's research project has been presented at academic meetings in China and internationally more than 30 times, with 95 SCI papers cited more than 2,345 times. Such publicity at home and abroad marks the first step in TCM's going international.
Among He's partner companies, the products made by Jingxiutang are most likely to be registered in the European Union. The company is currently striving to put its anti-inflammatory capsule on the international market.
