The discussion conference on proposals for two major projects of the National Social Science Fund was held in School of Journalism and Communication on March 16 and 17. The school also held the seventh Academic Forum on Southern Media, on the theme Theoretical Innovation of News Communication in the Age of Intelligence Media: Challenges and Trends. The two projects are Collection, Arrangement and Database Construction of Historical Materials of the CPC's Propaganda Work (1939-1966) and News Ethics and Regulations in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.”
Experts attending the conference included Lin Rupeng, secretary of the JNU's Party committee and a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication; Prof. Sun Xupei, former director of the Journalism and Communication Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and Chen Changfeng, chairman of the Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Mass Communication and a member of the Journalism and Communication Disciplines Appraisal Group of the State Council's Academic Degrees Committee. The meeting also attracted scholars from various universities and fields, including journalism and communication, history, the science of law, computer science and psychology, as well as all personnel from two research groups.
The two projects' leaders, Prof. Zhao Jianguo and Prof. Lin Aijun, both gave brief reports on their project design from the perspectives of general idea, value, object, major content, key points and difficulties.
The panel of experts applauded these two valuable research projects encompassing several disciplines, with great preparation in the early stages and potential for their orientation and initiatives. The experts also give useful suggestions on how to take the core concepts and topics further.

Lin Rupeng summarized his points and advice on collection of historical data in communications, unbalanced communication powers in the era of artificial intelligence, and global communication and governance. On behalf of the school, he extended congratulations on the opening of these two major projects and thanks to all experts and scholars for their comments and strong support in the discipline construction.

One research team held the seventh Southern Media Academic Forum on March 16. The next afternoon, another team led by Lin Aijun held a roundtable seminar to discuss and digest the expert opinions.
Among 342 major projects of the 2018 National Social Science Fund, 16 are about journalism and communication, including the two from the School of Journalism and Communication of JNU, which has broken the record in recent years.
