Since JNU reopened in 1978, the university and the city of Macao have established new ties with Macao students coming to JNU. 

From that year until Macao was returned to China from Portugal in 1999, the Macao graduates became the backbone of Special Economic Zone construction. In 2019 they have helped create the blueprint for development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. 
 
On Dec.19, Sun Jianrong, a pharmacy major from Macao, left his dorm at Panyu and took the school bus to the laboratory on the main campus. His project, Rapid Visual Detection of Bacterial Content and Drug Resistance Based on Colorimetry, won first prize in innovation achievements and the Excellent Paper Award at the 12th session of the National College Medicine Forum.

What attracts me most to JNU is that it will organize many activities tailored for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwanese students, said Huang Jiexing, a sophomore from Macao. 

Taking cultural identity as a link, every year JNU plans a tour and organizes a series of mobile courses on national conditions for more than 3,000 outstanding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwanese students. These courses include Chinese cultural tours, Guangdong social practices, and other historical and cultural explorations.

Jinan University was one of the first in the mainland to set up a medical school, which was also the first in the mainland to be certified by the World Health Organization. Its clinical medicine discipline is a characteristic specialty of China's Ministry of Education and has entered the top 1% of the ESI world rankings. This year, Zhang Jinbiao, an M.D.-Ph.D. student majoring in surgery, will complete his third year of graduate school. More than a dozen Macao students in Zhang’s undergraduate class have returned to Macao, and many have stayed in Guangdong to pursue further studies at Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Hospital and the Shenzhen Hospital of Hong Kong University. In addition, five graduates in Zhang’s major have returned to Macao to start their own practices and set up clinics.

We are the younger generation who grew up after Macao's return to the motherland, and we should take the initiative to take up our own historical mission, said Lv Qiqi, who said she hoped to give full play to her own advantages to link Guangdong's and Macao's high-quality media resources and corporate resources to promote the development of Macao's cultural and creative industries.

According to statistics, in Macao, population 600,000, one person in every six Macao families has graduated from Jinan University. Among these alumni, 80% of the journalists in Macao graduated from JNU, including Cui Zhitao, acting editor in chief of Macao Daily.

Wu Xiaoli, director of the Macao Kaifong Association, graduated from JNU's Japanese major in 1994 and is now a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Since 1978, JNU has been a veritable Macao talent tank, with more than 2,000 civil servants, 70% of doctors and 40% of financial professionals having graduated from Jinan University. They have played a major role in Macao's prosperity and stability.
